Kate McCarthy Wins UCI Esports Cycling World Championship 2023 | Dominant Performance (2025)

Kate McCarthy: A Cycling Champion's Unprecedented Triumph

Imagine conquering the world, not on a physical track, but in a virtual arena. That's precisely what New Zealand's Kate McCarthy has achieved, securing back-to-back titles at the UCI Esports World Championship grand finals in Abu Dhabi. This remarkable feat showcases not only her incredible skill but also the growing prominence of esports in the world of competitive cycling.

This unique competition utilizes stationary bikes connected to smart trainers and a virtual cycling platform known as MyWhoosh. The event, which has been running since 2020, features a three-stage point-based system designed to test athletes' versatility across different challenges.

McCarthy's dominance was evident from the start. She crushed the first stage, a grueling hill climb, and never looked back. By the end of the first stage, an 8.4km ascent with 554m of elevation, she had already built a commanding 28-point lead over her competitors. This early advantage set the stage for her overall victory.

In the second stage, McCarthy continued her impressive performance, earning nearly maximum points across five checkpoints within a 12km loop, boosting her score to 433 points. She then sealed her victory in the third stage, dominating the short laps and accumulating a total of 597 points. This placed her well ahead of Brazil's Gabriella Guerra, who scored 525 points, and Italy's Francesca Tommasi, who finished with 478 points.

McCarthy's strategy and execution were spot-on. "I was aiming to show what I can do up that first climb and then hopefully hang on for the next two stages," she revealed. Her success is a testament to her dedication and strategic approach to the competition.

Adding to the celebration, McCarthy's family, including her partner and former Olympic cyclist Dylan Kennett, were present to support her. "It was so cool to have them here," she shared, emphasizing the importance of their encouragement.

But here's where it gets controversial... the final round took place in person at the Space42 Arena, bringing the top 22 riders together. This shift from online qualification to an in-person final added a new dimension to the competition. As McCarthy noted, "It adds a different element, because we don't see each other usually and we don't get to see what each one looks like, so it is cool to bring it all together and to race each other in person."

Reflecting on her consecutive wins, McCarthy expressed her joy and satisfaction, stating, "I am still letting it sink in... I couldn't have had a better year."

The rewards for such excellence are significant, with the winners of both the elite men's and women's events receiving US$15,000 (approximately NZ$26,579) in prize money.

Other notable performances include Bridget Kiddle of Marlborough, who finished 16th in her first esports world championships. Christchurch cyclist Ollie Jones secured a respectable 10th place in the elite men's event, where Germany's Jason Osborne claimed his third consecutive title. Michael Vink, another New Zealander, was unfortunately unable to compete due to illness, despite a strong qualifying performance.

And this is the part most people miss... The esports cycling world championships are scheduled to return to Abu Dhabi in 2026.
