A record-breaking influx of patients has overwhelmed University Hospital Limerick's (UHL) emergency department, with over 350 individuals seeking medical attention within a 24-hour period. This unprecedented surge in attendance has sparked concern, especially as the flu season has yet to reach its peak. Half of these patients arrived without a prior referral from their general practitioner (GP).
The UL Hospitals Group has issued a plea to the residents of the Mid-West, urging them to utilize available resources efficiently. They recommend visiting local pharmacies, family doctors, or walk-in Injury Units for non-life-threatening conditions and injuries. These Injury Units, open from 8 am to 8 pm at Ennis, Nenagh, and St John’s Hospital, can treat a variety of issues, including broken bones, dislocations, and minor burns, with a typical wait time of around two hours. For more urgent care without ED attendance, GPs can refer patients to Medical Assessment Units in Ennis, Nenagh, or St John’s Hospitals.
Despite the overwhelming demand, the hospital staff are working tirelessly to provide the best possible care. The group emphasizes that the Emergency Department is reserved for patients with life-threatening emergencies, and those with less urgent illnesses may face prolonged wait times. They apologize for any inconvenience and ask for public support during this challenging period, prioritizing emergency care for the most vulnerable patients.
For further assistance, Shannondoc continues to operate from 6 pm to 8 am on weekdays, offering a 24-hour service on weekends. Contact them at 0818 123 500 for any urgent care needs that don’t require ED attendance.
