Universities are increasingly turning their backs on global higher education rankings, and it’s sparking a heated debate. But why are these institutions, tasked with advancing knowledge and innovation, suddenly questioning the very systems that measure their success? The latest to join this movement is Sorbonne University, a prestigious French research institution, which recently withdrew from the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, citing deep concerns about their methodology and transparency. This bold move has reignited a global conversation about the fairness, accuracy, and impact of these rankings.

Global higher education rankings, produced by organizations like QS, THE, and ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, are widely publicized and closely watched. They shape perceptions among prospective students, employers, and policymakers. However, they’ve also faced growing criticism over the years. And this is the part most people miss: Institutions, including several from India, argue that these rankings lack transparency in their data collection and fail to capture the full scope and diversity of higher education activities, contributions, and research. But here’s where it gets controversial—while some see rankings as essential for global visibility, others view them as flawed tools that prioritize competition over collaboration and innovation.

So, how do these international rankings work? There are three major players: QS, based in London, which uses 10 indicators (with academic reputation carrying the highest weight at 30%); THE, also headquartered in London, which relies on 17 indicators (with research environment and quality accounting for 59% of the score); and the Shanghai Ranking, produced in Shanghai, which focuses on six indicators, including Nobel laureates and highly cited researchers. QS and THE once collaborated on their rankings but now operate independently, producing annual global lists alongside subject- and region-specific rankings.

But here’s where it gets controversial: While THE requires institutions to submit data, QS and ShanghaiRanking use publicly available information. This raises questions about fairness—are institutions that don’t submit data being accurately represented? Sorbonne University, for instance, ranked 72 in QS, 76 in THE, and 43 in Shanghai, has criticized the overemphasis on reputation and research metrics, particularly in THE’s rankings. They argue that the methodology, which heavily favors English-language journals, disadvantages disciplines like humanities and social sciences. Is this a fair assessment, or are rankings simply reflecting global academic trends?

Sorbonne University also calls these rankings ‘black boxes,’ criticizing their lack of transparency in data and methodology. They point out that THE’s reliance on reputational surveys raises scientific, methodological, and ethical concerns. But is this a systemic issue, or are universities just resistant to being measured? Interestingly, Sorbonne praises Shanghai and QS for allowing institutions to opt out of rankings, a freedom THE does not offer.

Indian institutions, particularly the older IITs, have also boycotted THE rankings, citing transparency issues. In 2020, none of India’s institutions made it to the top 300, and only five of 23 IITs participated in the 2026 edition. And this is the part most people miss: Prof V Ramgopal Rao, former Director of IIT Delhi, highlights concerns like self-citations, where faculty members artificially inflate their citation counts, and the lack of clarity in geographical distribution of perception scores. He calls the ranking systems ‘between the devil and the deep sea,’ a stark critique that invites debate.

Utrecht University in the Netherlands took a similar stand in 2023, withdrawing from THE rankings over concerns about excessive competition and the impossibility of reducing a university’s quality to a single number. They also criticized the use of subscription-based databases like Scopus and Web of Science, which Sorbonne University has also rejected in favor of open, participatory platforms like OpenAlex. But is this a step toward a more equitable system, or are these institutions simply avoiding scrutiny?

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has set an ambitious goal: to have 25 Indian institutions in the top 100 of QS rankings by 2026. But with many institutions boycotting rankings, is this goal realistic? THE rankings defend their process, emphasizing their use of independent data, including 1.5 million votes from academics and 175 million citations.
