Progress on women’s representation in national legislatures was “slow and mixed” in 2023, registering a growth of 0.4 per cent over the preceding year, the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) reported recently. The global proportion of women in the world’s voting chambers inched up to 26.9 per cent on the back of elections and appointments through the year, the international organization said in its latest report on Women in Parliament. The growth was similar to the increase in 2022, but slower than the two years prior, IPU said. In both 2021 and 2020, the increase was 0.6 per cent.Rwanda once again led the world ranking with women accounting for 61.3 per cent of seats in the Chamber of Deputies, followed by Cuba and Nicaragua with 55.7 per cent and 53.9 per cent, respectively.Regionally, the Americas maintained its long-held position with the highest representation of women, at 35.1 per cent. The IPU is an international organization distinct from the United Nations. Both organizations share common goals and objectives related to empowerment and more inclusive decision making, and work towards promoting dialogue and cooperation among nations.IPU enjoys a special status at the UN, with a standing invitation to participate as an observer in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly. To read more, click on: https://lnkd.in/dhAA6w8Y

SA-BEST Member of Parliament at South Australia

To be a woman in politics in an institution that was made for men, by men is still a daunting task for any women at any level in Parliament. The first batch of aspiring female leaders through @uniofadelaide Pathway to Politics is tremendously encouraging to see women of all backgrounds and ages, wanting to begin their own pathway into Parliament.Advocating for more women to step forward to represent South Australia and their community on the front lines of Parliament, particularly at State level, to bring change to the current political course discourse for the benefit of everyone is exactly why Pathway to Politics is perhaps, a way to get South Australia’s first female Premier. As of November 2023, Australia only ranks 33rd in the world, with only 38.4% of seats in the Federal lower house, however, women hold the majority of 56.6% in the upper house of Federal Parliament.South Australia’s upper house that seats 22 at any given time, has only ever had 24 women represented in the Legislative Council since 1840, with a majority on the back benches. This currently includes 11 female MLC’s serving South Australia, including myself. In 2020, when I was serving as a MLC, only 29 per cent of SA's Parliament were women across the Upper and Lower house.Australia sits just behind Switzerland, with New Zealand ranking 16th for a global ranking of women in National Parliament by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).The amazing 13 participants of the program are both courageous and intelligent, and I cannot wait to see them flourish in the hallways of Parliament one day.Read more about the program here: https://lnkd.in/gVU_KwaZ

In the space of 4 years, from 2017 to 2021, the percentage of Australian girls and young women who felt female politicians were treated unfairly rose dramatically from 56 to 73% for 18-21-year-olds and 78% for 22-25-year-olds, according to Plan International Australia’s major research project. How women are treated in politics and the parliamentary system is a large part of theoverall problem of low trust in government. And women in the political system are powerful agents of change. That’s why we work to support them across party lines to transform the experience of parliament for the participation and flourishing of women and all people who enter parliament. In late 2023 Next25 facilitated our second highly successful “Improving Democracy: Transforming Parliament for Women” program with NSW women politicians.“It was a breath of air to have a supported and facilitated space to reflect on the broad challenges of our work and to have a platform for collective action. I would not have taken the time or committed the energy to this task without a program like Next25 that was so strongly recommended by my peers.” - Anon, NSW GreensNext25 is energised to kick off 2024 by reconvening with the women who participated in the 2022 and 2023 programs to support them in further progressing their interventions and lay the groundwork for more women and men to join them in 2024. Is there a woman politician you think would be a great agent of change, helping to transform politics for women, and restore trust in our parliaments and politicians? Please take a minute to nominate them here: https://lnkd.in/grgDx8yCYou can read more of Plan International Australia's "We Can Lead” study here: https://lnkd.in/gHQGnPQ4.#trustingovernment #futuremaking #valuesbasedleadership

We stand on the shoulders of those who come before us. Today is significant as it marks an unshackling of fear, a blossoming of hope, and a statement of conviction that women can - and will - challenge the systems that cause sexism, misogyny, and inequity in politics. This week, Next25 launch the first nationwide Improving Democracy: Transforming Parliament for Women program, inviting all women MPs to join a collective of Australian women driving change in parliaments across Australia and restoring trust with a disillusioned public. This launch is due in large part to the commitment and trust of NSW women MPs who dove into this program and continue to collaborate across party lines on amazing systems change work - you can hear some of them in the video below. Equally moving, is one participant recently calling the program "Women Transforming Parliament For All" 🎉 If you're interested in politics, democracy, or the way women are treated in either, please consider sharing this video. Today the UNWomen Executive Board discusses the ACABQ recommendations on its budget proposal - which includes the recommendation for greater cooperation with the UN Development System. New research on cooperation between development agencies highlights that there are structural, resource and mandate-related factors that facilitate - or hinder - cooperation. We highlight what this means for UNWomen and why it may want to choose coordination over cooperation in certain instances - or vice versa - all while being able to explain to the ACABQ why those choices were made.#unreform #humanrights #womensrights
